Categorize Your Expenses for RV Living

This doesn’t have to be difficult. You just need to break down your expenses into categories such as camping or RV parking costs, fuel, maintenance, insurances, groceries, eating out, entertainment, toiletries, Medical, prescriptions and of course my favourite – miscellaneous.

Calculate Your Fixed Costs

This is where you include fixed costs such as RV payments, loans, insurance, monthly utilities (internet), and any other monthly expenses you have regularly. If you have any camping memberships you may yearly, etc. include them here.

Variable Costs while budgeting for Full Time RV Living

As you can probably already guess you can estimate what your variable costs will be. These could include fuel, campground fees, propane, and maintenance.  Remember, these costs will vary based on how much you travel, eat out or spend on other items than necessities.

RV Parking / Campground Costs

You will need to research and estimate campground fees depending on where you’re traveling, how long you will stay at any location. If you stay longer in one location it’s possible to get discounted rates which helps reduce your monthly expenses.

Fuel Costs for Full Time RV Living

Once again, this expense will depend on how much you’re traveling and the cost of gas or diesel at the time.  You can estimate what your costs will be by knowing the distance you’ll be traveling and multiple it by the average cost per litre/gallon and you’ll have a fairly decent idea as to what your fuel costs will be.

Your Budget for Full time RV Living Includes Groceries

I wish I could get organized to do this! Planning your meals ahead of time really can reduce the cost of groceries and by not eating out as often can help save money.  But, if eating out and not doing any meal planning is your thing you’ll have to budget accordingly. I do!

Entertainment and Activities

You need to allocate funds for entertainment, activities, and any attractions or events you plan to attend.

Emergency Fund

We would all like to think that nothing will go wrong. But, it does. So, you need to set aside fund for unexpected expenses or emergencies.

Health Care Expenses for Full Time RV Living

This includes expenses such as prescriptions, medical supplies, and any other healthcare costs you may have. You may include toiletries here or have a separate category.

Technology and Communication

I’ve lumped a few items together such as cell phones, internet, and any other expenses you incur to stay connected. This could also include postal / mail forwarding services.

Travel Insurance for Full Time RVers

If you travel outside of the country or even your own province you need travel insurance. You don’t want to be a long distance from home if you get sick and have no protection. It could get expensive.

Independent of regular medical we do need travel insurance at times. I recommend you read this to ensure you are covered adequately.

RV Maintenance & Repairs

Taking care of regular maintenance can save you money in the long run and just the same as having a regular house our RVs need to be maintained. Things bread and your RV won’t be any different so be prepared.

Miscellaneous Category

Include this category for unexpected or one-time expenses.

Review & Adjust Your Budget for Full Time RV Living

Regularly review and adjust your budget for full time RV Living based on what you actually spent. This helps you stay on track and you can make any necessary adjustments as needed.

Conclusion: Full Time RV Living Budget

Remember that individual circumstances and preferences do vary, so tailor your budget to suit your specific needs and lifestyle. It’s essential to have a financial cushion for unexpected expenses and emergencies while you are living a full time RV lifestyle. Talk to other RVers and ask questions. I find the RV community very helpful and are usually very willing to share ideas and suggestions.
